In early 2009 we began re-vamping our breeding program. This involved a serious culling process and an extensive review of our pedigrees. It was painful to say the least but everyone comes to that place at some time and we decided that top quality was more important than quantity. Our main objective then became to maintain only twelve superior cows.
Another aspect was bull selection. Looking at the maternal side of these animals to ensure every trait was taken into consideration, we made a decision on two leading bull lines. We have chosen Gunman and Hunts Command Respect bloodlines to cross our cattle with and we have been pleasantly surprised with our last two calf crops.
We retained five heifers from our 2010 calf crop, all projecting into the mid seventies at maturity. 2011 brought us several interesting prospects and we will make our selections in the upcoming months. Another aspect we are instituting is the breeding of our heifers at age two, allowing for more maturity in size and horn before the calving process begins.
Calving season has produced some great combinations. Measuring our heifers from LC Bladen and Sittin Bull is turning out to be quite interesting! The results are looking good!
